MATSYA PURANA

MATSYA PURANA

STORY OF MANU

According to Hindu mythology , the Matsya Purana , is one of the eighteen major Puranas . According to the text , Matsya is the first avatar of Hindu God Vishnu , in the form of a giant fish . The text describes the tale of a great flood , where Matsya is described to have rescued the first man , Manu . Matsya forewarns Manu about an impending catastrophic flood . He orders him to collect all the grains of the world , all living creatures as well as Sapta rishis (the seven sages ) .When the flood destroys the world , Vasuki appeared as rope , to fasten the boat with the horn of the giant fish . Matsya pulls the boat to safety & rescued Manu , accompanied by the seven great sages .

Hence,The great  Manu is known as progenitor of current humanity . He was a king of Dravida kingdom before the great flood .

Sapta rishis are seven great sages , who bring down to the earth the required knowledge and energies to strengthen the processes of Transition .They are naturally the most evolved Light Beings in the Creation and the guardians of the Divine Laws .

In rural India, village women like to adorn their mud house & courtyards with patterns of white color ,made of rice powder. In Bengal it is known as Alpana , Aripana in Bihar , Mandana in Rajasthan , Kolam in Tamil Nadu & many other names in various other states of India .

My  artwork is based on such unique concept of Alpana.I have seen Alpana  only in the form of designs. But the beauty of such intricate patterns must be displayed in various ways.So i used such patterns to draw a scene which tells the story of Matsya Purana.

The wall color of a mud house is  brown ,upon which they make patterns with natural white color .So in order to replicate the feeling of  mud walls ,I decided to give a touch of burnt sienna as background color. Sienna is an earth pigment ,when heated to  become reddish brown known as burnt sienna.Other than burnt sienna , I also applied titanium white , cool white & warm white as well as combination of buttermilk  & orange .

Warli art showcases day to day life of tribals. In this art  human anatomy is easily framed using one circle, two triangles ,four lines & dots.On the other hand, the story of Manu also signifies humanity. Therefore MATSYA PURANA is bordered by Warli human patterns in order to signify that the story of Manu is all about humanity .
